A useful troubleshooting process separates four layers: camera power, connection, app or account settings, and recording. Changing several settings at once hides the real cause and can create a second problem.
Run these five checks first
- Confirm the camera has power and shows its normal status light or app state.
- Check whether one camera or the entire system is affected.
- Confirm the system is armed and motion recording is enabled for that device.
- Check the phone’s notification permission, background activity, and focus or do-not-disturb settings.
- Trigger a test event and record the exact time so you can inspect logs, clip history, and support records.
Camera is offline or live view will not open
| What you observe | Likely area | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Only one camera is offline | Its power, signal, or device state | Bring it close to the router or hub and retry with known-good power. |
| Every camera is offline | Router, internet, hub, account, or service | Check another internet device, then restart the router and camera hub in order. |
| It works indoors but not at the mount | Weak or obstructed wireless path | Test a closer position or improve router, hub, or access-point placement. |
| It failed after a Wi-Fi change | Old network credentials or unsupported band | Use the app’s network-change flow for the exact model. |
| Local video works but remote view fails | Internet upload, firewall, account, or service | Test from mobile data and check the vendor’s current service status. |
For battery devices, recharge fully or replace the complete battery set with the specified type. For wired or plug-in cameras, test the outlet, adapter, cable, transformer, or PoE port with safe known-good equipment.
Motion is missed—or alerts arrive after the person leaves
- Walk across the image instead of directly toward the lens.
- Check that the approach is not inside an excluded zone.
- Move the camera closer or lower if a person is very small in the frame.
- Raise sensitivity one step and test again; do not jump directly to maximum.
- Check retrigger, cooldown, snooze, schedule, geofencing, and home or away modes.
- For tracked or motorized cameras, confirm the home position still covers the entry point.
Notifications are delayed, duplicated, or missing
- Confirm the event exists in the camera app. If the clip is present but the alert is absent, focus on phone or app notification settings.
- Disable battery optimization for the camera app if the phone delays background activity.
- Check whether alerts are muted by a schedule, automation, shared-user role, or focus mode.
- Test once on home Wi-Fi and once on mobile data to separate phone-network delay from camera upload delay.
- Remove duplicate automations when both the camera app and a smart-home platform announce the same event.
Alerts arrive, but clips are missing or cannot be replayed
| Recording method | Check |
|---|---|
| Cloud | Plan or trial status, retention period, device coverage, payment state, and account region. |
| microSD | Card detection, formatting, free space, endurance rating, and whether recording mode is enabled. |
| Hub or base station | Hub power, connection, attached storage, camera assignment, and remote-access rules. |
| NVR or PoE | Channel status, drive health, recording schedule, date and time, and retention overwrite settings. |
Create a fresh test event, wait for processing to finish, and verify playback from both the main account and any shared account that needs access.
Night video is white, foggy, black, or full of glare
- Clean the lens and front surface with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- Remove protective film and check for condensation, water spots, spider webs, or insects.
- Aim away from nearby walls, eaves, windows, gutters, and shiny objects that reflect infrared light.
- Move an indoor camera away from glass; infrared illumination usually reflects back from a window.
- Test lower infrared intensity or a nearby visible light when the app provides those controls.
Battery drains or solar charging cannot keep up
Busy scenes, long clips, repeated live view, tracking, high-quality streaming, weak signal, cold weather, and frequent night illumination all consume more power.
- Count the previous day’s events and look for traffic, branches, shadows, or animals creating repeated triggers.
- Tighten zones and reduce sensitivity slightly.
- Shorten clips or increase cooldown only if the recorded events remain useful.
- Improve the wireless path so the camera spends less time retrying uploads.
- For solar systems, remove shade, clean the panel, adjust its seasonal angle, and check the cable connection.
- Recharge fully or replace the complete battery set before judging the result.
Audio, chime, pan, and tracking problems
Two-way audio is choppy or quiet
Confirm microphone permission, remove any case obstruction, and test close to the camera. If video is also unstable, solve the connection problem first. Avoid speaking over the other side if the device uses half-duplex audio.
A doorbell does not ring the indoor chime
Confirm chime type, transformer compatibility, bypass or adapter requirements, and the app’s chime setting. Disconnect power before wiring and use a qualified installer when required.
Pan, tilt, or tracking points the wrong way
Recalibrate the motor, set the correct home position, remove obstacles around its movement, define privacy or patrol boundaries, and test two people entering from different directions.
